A new quarterback is en route to Denver.

Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Case Keenum intends to sign with the Broncos when free agency starts Wednesday morning, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The terms of the deal haven’t been released, but analysts project Keenum’s salary to sit somewhere in the $16-18m per year range. The deal is expected to be short-term according to 9News’ Mike Klis, which could leave drafting a quarterback on the table.

Keenum played the most impressive stretch of football in his six-year NFL career this season, when he led the Vikings to the NFC Championship game. The 30-year-old signed a one-year deal with Minnesota last offseason to back up Sam Bradford. When Bradford’s season ended after an injury in Week 2, Keenum took over.

Keenum completed more than two-thirds of his passes and finished the season with 3,547 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. His 98.3 passer rating ranked seventh in the NFL, and according to Pro Football Focus, it only dropped to 94.5 when he was pressured, a key figure considering the Broncos gave up the third-most sacks in 2017.

Keenum entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Houston in 2012, despite holding NCAA records for most passing yards, passing touchdowns, and 300-yard passing games, among others. He spent his rookie season on the Texans’ practice squad—a team that featured head coach Gary Kubiak and defensive backs coach Vance Joseph—and started eight games in his second season, losing all of them on a 2-14 squad. He started 14 games for the Rams over the next two seasons before signing with Minnesota.
